Wipro, one of India’s leading IT firms, is introducing a new work policy that mandates employees to be physically present in the office for at least three days a week starting from November 15. The company has emphasized that non-adherence to this policy could result in disciplinary action commencing from January 7, 2024.
The “compulsory hybrid work policy” from Wipro requires employees to attend their respective office locations for a minimum of three days per week. This decision is intended to promote collaboration among teams, facilitate face-to-face interactions, and reinforce the company’s culture, as highlighted in an internal communication by Wipro’s chief human resources officer, Saurabh Govil.
Similar strategies have been implemented by other IT giants, such as Infosys, which has initiated a requirement for employees to work from the office for a minimum of ten days each month. Wipro’s move comes at a time when the IT industry is facing challenges due to its slowest growth in a decade.
This trend of companies urging employees to return to the office aligns with a broader shift in the tech sector, as several major IT companies, including Wipro, Capgemini, and LTIMindtree, are pushing for increased in-office presence. These measures are expected to bring an end to the work-from-home flexibility that emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The shift back to office-based work is partly driven by concerns related to data privacy and client confidentiality, as well as the aim to boost collaboration and productivity within the workforce. This decision also follows instances of employees engaging in outside work with rival companies, prompting IT firms to reevaluate their work arrangements.
