Toxic work culture is rife in the Indian financial sector, especially when it involves sales and targets. Recently, two videos went viral in which managers from Bandhan Bank and Canara Bank are shown reprimanding their younger employees with vulgar language for failing to fulfill targets.
One of the videos that surfaced on April 24 shows a Bandhan Bank officer named Kunal Bhardwaj screaming at a subordinate employee who appears to have failed to fulfill the month’s targets.
When the employee apologized for their error and promised to fix it, Bhardwaj responded, “Definitely correct sir?” Are you embarrassed of yourself? “This is March?”
In a similar video that surfaced on May 4, a Canara Bank supervisor named Lokapati Swain may be seen scolding staff for preferring personal time above work.
Reacting to this incident, Bandhan Bank said,”The bank has taken note of the incident. At Bandhan Bank, we prioritize values and reject such actions. We do not support or promote such an approach. The necessary procedure has already been taken, and we will take the relevant actions in accordance with the Bank’s policy.”
Despite clarifications from the banks, the videos have sparked outrage among social media users. Despite comments from the banks, the films have provoked fury among social media users. “Thousands of such incidences go undiscovered in a toxic company like yours, @canarabank. What action has been taken in response to a particularly sensationalized case? Also, we will ensure that the employee who brought this up is not harassed, as you have a history of doing so!” said one user.
