Tech companies have recently been shifting their work policies, with a clear trend emerging towards a return to in-office work. Following in the footsteps of TCS and Infosys, HCLTech, a prominent IT giant, has also taken steps to bring its employees back to the office, requiring them to spend at least three days a week working on-site.
C Vijayakumar, the CEO and Managing Director of HCLTech, expressed his viewpoint on this shift, stating, “Continuously working away from the office is not a good idea at all.” He emphasized that the company aims to provide some flexibility to its employees regarding which three days they choose to work in the office.
This decision falls in line with a broader trend observed among Indian tech companies, including Wipro, TCS, and Infosys, all of which have embraced a return to office-based work models.
Wipro, a well-known Indian multinational corporation, recently mandated that its employees report to the office for at least three days each week, effective from November 15, 2023. Saurabh Govil, Wipro’s Chief Human Resources Officer, communicated this change to employees, highlighting its objectives: “Starting November 15, all employees must be present at their assigned office location for at least three days each week. This change aims to enhance teamwork, facilitate face-to-face interactions, and strengthen Wipro’s culture.”
Similarly, Infosys has recently abandoned its work-from-home option and instructed employees to return to the office. This policy shift primarily affects employees categorized under Brand 5 and 6, including mid-level managers and entry-level staff. They are now required to work for a minimum of 10 days each month from the office, effective from November 20, 2023.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has also taken a decisive step by discontinuing its hybrid work policy and requiring employees to work in the office five days a week, starting from October 1, 2023. Prior to this change, employees had been following a hybrid model, working from the office three days a week. The company communicated this policy shift through internal channels, stating, “As communicated by the CEO and chief human resources officer (CHRO) in various townhalls, it is mandatory for all associates to attend the office on all working days (five days per week if there are no holidays) starting from October 1, 2023.”
In light of these developments, it is evident that the tech industry in India is undergoing a significant transformation, prioritizing in-person work to foster collaboration, communication, and organizational culture.
