Roles & Responsibilities for Nicu Staff Nurse
- NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nurse who provides specialized nursing care for newborns with critical needs or born preterm
- Continuous monitoring of vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and temperature)
- Good Practice : Handling and managing NICU equipment ( Ventilators, incubator, CPAP machines, Infusion pumps )
- Plan out medications prescribed, IV fluids, antibiotics and nutrition (TPN ‐ Total Parenteral Nutrition)
- Assist with emergency care like procedures including neonatal resuscitation, and newborn stabilization
- Document patient charts and nursing notes accurately & thoroughly
- Monitor and inform any changes in the baby onto the neonatologist at once.
- Provide information on preventing health care-associated infections
- Then also make sure that you must have a feeding support such as breastfeeding assistance or tube feeding.
- Give parents emotional support and guide them on newborn care, NICU functions
- To prepare infants for diagnostic testing and help physicians for medical procedures
