Two separate incidents have highlighted the alarming rise in cybercrime cases, where two women fell victim to scams amounting to a staggering Rs 6.6 lakh in total. These incidents occurred on August 15th, shedding light on the sophisticated tactics employed by fraudsters who lure individuals with promises of work-from-home job opportunities.
In the first case, a distressing scenario unfolded for a 32-year-old senior HR manager employed at a private firm. The unsuspecting victim, identified as Ramya and residing in Nandini Layout, north Bengaluru, received an enticing text message on her mobile device, proposing an attractive work-from-home option. Fueled by the appeal of remote work, Ramya decided to explore this opportunity further.
Upon responding to the initial text, she was directed to provide her details online and was assigned a series of tasks. As the interaction with the fraudsters progressed, they presented her with an unusual proposition: for every Rs 5,000 she deposited, she would supposedly receive a reward of Rs 7,000. Intrigued by the seemingly lucrative deal, Ramya made the unfortunate decision to invest a significant amount of Rs 6 lakh into this fraudulent scheme.
However, it didn’t take long for reality to set in. Ramya soon realized that she had fallen victim to a well-orchestrated scam. Her hard-earned money had vanished into the hands of cybercriminals who preyed on her hopes of securing a work-from-home position.
The second incident mirrored the distressing trend, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals seeking legitimate remote job opportunities. A 29-year-old homemaker, Geeta, residing in Andrahalli, shared her harrowing experience with the Cubbon Park police. Geeta’s husband had reportedly taken the initiative to search for a suitable work-from-home job on her behalf through a messaging platform. He subsequently received a message from an individual named Neeta Thakur, who portrayed herself as a potential employer.
The communication with Neeta Thakur led Geeta to believe that a legitimate work-from-home opportunity was within her grasp. However, this belief was shattered when miscreants associated with the scam managed to convince Geeta to part with a substantial sum of over Rs 67,000.
These incidents underscore the pressing need for heightened awareness regarding cyber threats, especially those targeting individuals searching for remote job opportunities. The unfortunate cases of Ramya and Geeta demonstrate the importance of verifying the authenticity of such offers and refraining from sharing personal or financial information without proper verification.
